Darlington vs Walsall Match Preview
Darlington are fighting their way back up the Football League pyramid after terrible financial problems – and will fancy their chances of knocking Walsall out of the FA Cup at the second time of asking.
The Quakers had to be re-formed in 2012 after years of off-the-pitch strife largely caused by moving to a new 25,000-capacity stadium which they could nowhere near fill and do not play at now – instead occupying Blackwell Meadows which holds only just over 3,000.
They dropped to the ninth tier of English football but are back up to the sixth, albeit they will need an excellent second half of this season to be promoted again this time around.
But Alun Armstrong’s side showed what they can do when drawing the original match of this tie 2-2 away to Walsall, who are two divisions above them, with a dramatic finish comprising two goals for the home team, an equaliser for Darlington and a red card apiece!
Walsall have experienced a fall from grace in the last couple of years, being relegated to League Two and currently only two places above the drop zone under manager Darrell Clarke who took over in the summer.
Incredibly, 21 years ago, Darlington held Manchester City to a 1-1 draw in the second round of the FA Cup before losing the replay at Maine Road in extra time – and how those two clubs’ trajectories have diverged since then.
This time, an additional half-hour may again be required as Darlington strive to reach that same second-round stage – only it will not be the Premier League champions who lie in wait for them but Oxford United.
