Cyprus have never qualified for a major tournament before, but plenty is being done to try and help the minnows of international football close the gap at the moment. The White & Blues are one of the teams that have benefitted from competing against similar competition in the UEFA Nations League and with the expansions of the World Cup and the European Championships they will have more chances to qualify in future years.

Having done well to avoid relegation from what was a tough Division Three Nations League group, Ran Ben Shimon’s men started this qualifying period with a thumping win over San Marino and although that has been followed up by a trio of consecutive defeats, they’ve done well to keep things tight and lose by just one goal against both Scotland and Russia. Can they now earn another three points at odds of 6/5 with PaddyPower?

Kazakhstan are in a similar situation to their Friday night opponents having never managed to qualify for a major tournament before but football is improving as a whole in their country and they continue to make progress as an international side. They finished second in their Nations League group behind a rampant Georgia and they’ve made a relatively strong start to this qualifying campaign for the next European Championships.

After a thumping 3-0 win over Scotland in their opening game, perhaps one of the most impressive results in the nation’s history, the Hawks then slipped to disappointing defeats at home to Russia and away to Belgium before returning to winning form by thumping minnows San Marino in front of their own supporters last time out. An away win on this trip to Cyprus at odds of 5/2 with Unibet will give them a real chance of qualifying.

The bookmakers always fancy low-scoring games between these perceived minnows but we’re backing goals here. In their opening four games of this qualifying group, Kazakhstan have scored and conceded seven goals and while Cyprus have been rather defensive in those narrow defeats to teams like Russia and Belgium, they’re likely to be more open in a home game they will feel capable of winning. It’s tough to pick a winner between these two. Although for us, Cyprus are the favourites with good reason having enjoyed a better overall record in recent years and having the home advantage, we can see Kazakhstan taking something from this game if they can perform to the same standard set in those wins over Scotland and San Marino.
