Cyprus vs Belgium Match Preview

Cyprus have never managed to make it to the finals of a major international tournament in 28 previous attempts. With a much smaller population than the majority of their European neighbours, the nation is always going to struggle when it comes to qualifying for international tournaments but after Scotland’s humiliating defeat to Kazakhstan last week they may see an opportunity opening up to surprise some people in this tournament.

A 5-0 win over minnows San Marino in their opening fixture will have done their confidence plenty of favours and the White-Blues come into the qualifying period on the back of a productive UEFA Nations League campaign that saw them pick up four points over Slovenia and a draw with Bulgaria. Despite this improved form and quality in recent months this test against Belgium should prove too much for them, hence odds of 16/1 with William Hill.

Belgium enjoyed their best ever campaign at a major international tournament at this summer’s World Cup. After two years of building under Roberto Martinez following their humiliating exit at the hands of Wales at Euro 2016, Belgium managed to reach the semi-finals of the tournament, beating Brazil and England on the way before crashing out to France who of course went on to win the final by beating Croatia in Moscow.

A shock 5-2 defeat at the hands of Switzerland in their final game of the UEFA Nations League group stages saw de Rode Duivels miss out on the finals in Portugal but they will now turn their hand towards qualification for Euro 2016 and after facing probably their most difficult opposition in the shape of Russia on Thursday and swatting them aside with a comfortable 3-1 win. You have to expect them to win this game with relative ease too at 1/6 with  Bet365.

Since their qualifying period for the European Championships, Cyprus haven’t really suffered any huge defeats but they did face Belgium home and away in that campaign and they lost 0-3 in front of their own fans and 4-0 away from home. With the attacking quality that Roberto Martinez has at his disposal through players like Eden Hazard, Dries Mertens and Michy Batshuayi, the visitors shouldn’t have any problems in winning this one with a two goal handicap at 6/4 with Bet365.

Eden Hazard scored twice for his country in their win over Russia and the Chelsea forward is now the talismanic captain of this side. Those strikes took the 28 year old’s tally to 28 in all competitions for his country and we’re backing him to open the scoring here at 9/2 with William Hill.
