CSKA Sofia vs Titograd Match Preview

Titograd, formerly known as Mladost Podgorica, have a respectable away record in Europe but they are big outsiders for their opening match of the campaign in the Bulgarian capital.

Having alternated between their two names since their inauguration in 1951, Titograd have now reverted to the old title of their home city of Podgorica – and the fact they have been drawn against Bulgarian opposition may evoke some good memories for their supporters.

That is because their previous trip to the Balkan country came in the Champions League three years ago and although they were beaten decisively, it did at least come as a result of having been Montenegrin champions for the one and only time.

CSKA Sofia, meanwhile, were second in the Bulgarian league last term but, along with their city rivals Levski, start in the opening round of this competition because Lokomotiv Plovdiv gained preference by winning the domestic cup.

They have some players who will be known to UK football fans because CSKA have this summer signed Scottish forward Tony Watt, Irish midfielder Graham Carey from Plymouth Argyle and also Diego Fabbrini, formerly of Watford and Birmingham City. Their captain is ex-Fulham defender Nikolay Bodurov.

That trio will be relishing the prospect of playing European football and CSKA are backed to win this first leg comfortably because completing the job in Montenegro.
