Crystal Palace vs Southampton Match Preview
Southampton’s excellent run of form came to a bizarre end on Saturday and they will try to get back on track away to Crystal Palace, who gained a terrific draw at Manchester City.
After winning five of their previous six games and drawing the other (versus Palace), Saints were flying once more when they led 2-0 at half time against Wolves. But from being in complete control, Southampton conceded three goals in 24 minutes and ended up losing 3-2.
This next fixture could tell us if that was just a blip for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side or whether their superb run is now levelling off, especially as they are generally strong away from home (see stats above). But instead, we suspect that question may remain after the final whistle.
That is partly because Palace are draw specialists with six stalemates in their last nine games. The latest of those was 2-2 at Manchester City in a topsy-turvy encounter where the Eagles led for 43 minutes, then conceded two late Sergio Aguero goals but equalised right at the end when Fernandinho turned Wilfried Zaha’s cross into his own net.
Still in the top half of the table, what will please Palace manager Roy Hodgson most is how difficult his team are to beat when they face teams from outside the top four – they have lost only three such league matches all season.
This, of course, is another of those tests and we can see this being yet another draw for Palace against a Southampton side who may well tell us during February just how much they have truly improved.
