Crystal Palace vs Manchester City Match Preview
Manchester City must scarcely believe they are eight points off the Premier League pace so early in the season – and they cannot afford to slip up again when they visit Crystal Palace.
There is nothing the reigning champions could have done about Liverpool’s relentless start to the campaign, but they have not helped themselves by drawing at home to Tottenham and, more surprisingly, losing against Norwich and Wolves.
Central defensive injuries, on top of Vincent Kompany’s departure, have clearly been a bugbear for Pep Guardiola and that is an area he will surely address in the January transfer window – although John Stones is now close to returning, possibly even for this match.
However, City could not break down Wolves even with 76% possession before losing 2-0 and they could find Palace similarly stubborn, given they have conceded only one goal in five league and cup matches at Selhurst Park this term.
Manager Roy Hodgson must be delighted that his side spent the international break in the top six of the table and if they can repeat last season’s shock victory at the Etihad Stadium here, the Eagles would actually go above City!
However, the situation is already starting to become urgent for the champions, if not critical, and so they are expected to cut Liverpool’s lead to five points with a routine victory – and then hope for a big favour from their local rivals Manchester United on Sunday.
