Coventry City vs Southend United Match Preview
Coventry City find themselves temporarily homeless again, but are backed to banish that worry by opening their 2019-20 campaign with victory over Southend in Birmingham.
Just as they did in 2013-14, the Sky Blues are having to play home games outside of their own city this season due to a disagreement with the owners of the Ricoh Arena, namely rugby union club Wasps.
It’s a far from ideal scenario, but at least for the supporters it’s a much shorter journey to Birmingham City’s St Andrew’s ground than it was to Northampton six years ago.
Still, if they can adapt quickly to their new surroundings, this could be a promising season for Coventry.
They finished eighth in League One last term and have remained unbeaten in their warm-up matches – albeit none of them were at St Andrew’s – with French striker Maxime Biamou looking in good form, while manager Mark Robins has signed 10 new players.
Southend, meanwhile, only avoided relegation on goal difference last term and staying up will be their top priority this time around, although the 12-point deductions issued to Bolton and Bury are sure to help in that regard.
They have Kevin Bond in charge and pre-season results have been mixed, although young forward Stephen Humphrys has continued to look a highly promising recruit from Fulham.
With the crowd being the only factor that truly make this a home game for Coventry until they settle in to their new surroundings, it is difficult to be hugely confident about the outcome but Robins’ men are fancied to edge out the visiting Shrimpers.
