Cove Rangers are less than a month away from starting their first ever Scottish League campaign, and now gain more valuable match practice in the League Cup against a Dundee side newly relegated from the top flight.
Based in the southern suburbs of Aberdeen, Cove have established themselves as the most consistently successful club in the Highland League over the last few years – and in May they took advantage of the play-off system that was introduced in 2014-15 to give a non-League team the chance to break through the glass ceiling and gain promotion to League Two.
They did so in some style too, firstly beating Lowland League champions East Kilbride and then dishing out a 7-0 aggregate stuffing to Berwick Rangers, which means there are no longer any English clubs playing in the Scottish League!
The bookmakers have installed Cove as favourites to go straight up again into League One, with Paul Hartley having recently taken over as their manager, and how they fare in the League Cup might be an interesting gauge to their prospects.
A 2-1 defeat away to League One side Peterhead on Saturday was no disgrace, with Cove having taken the lead, but this will be more difficult as Dundee opened up with a 3-0 triumph away to Raith Rovers in rookie manager James McPake’s first game in permanent charge.
Hartley, who was Dundee boss himself for over three years, would love to take his former club’s scalp, but the Dark Blues impressed in their first game since being relegated from the Premiership and are backed to make it two wins out of two in Group D.
