Colchester United vs Tottenham Hotspur Match Preview
Colchester have already claimed one Premier League scalp in this season’s Carabao Cup and aim to take an even bigger one on Tuesday when they host Tottenham Hotspur.
The Us followed up their 3-0 home win over fellow League Two club Swindon in the first round by travelling to Selhurst Park and holding Crystal Palace to a 0-0 draw before prevailing 5-4 on penalties.
That was a terrific achievement by John McGreal’s side, who are 10th in the fourth-tier table but in decent form just now after another 3-0 victory against Swindon and a 2-1 home success over Leyton Orient at the weekend.
This will be a huge occasion for the Essex club, who are unlucky not to have got a financial windfall from live TV coverage when they face Spurs for only the second time. The previous occasion was an FA Cup tie four seasons ago when most of Tottenham’s big stars featured but Eric Dier was the only current player to get on the scoresheet in a 4-1 triumph.
Dier is likely to feature again, for the first time this season having been a perennial unused substitute, as Spurs bid to improve upon a record of only two wins in seven matches so far.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side should enhance that slightly alarming record comfortably, but they have kept only one away clean sheet in their last 17 attempts and there may well be a consolation goal for Colchester.
