Chelsea vs Valencia Match Preview
Frank Lampard, who played a big part in Chelsea’s 2012 Champions League triumph, makes his coaching debut in the competition on Tuesday – against a manager with even less senior experience than him!
The ex-England midfielder scored three Champions League goals in the season when Chelsea conquered the continent for the one and only time, including away to Valencia in the group stage. In total, Lampard bagged 25 European goals for the Blues and also helped them to win the Europa League in 2013, playing every minute of the final as he had 12 months earlier.
He is, of course, in only his second managerial campaign after cutting his teeth with Derby last term, and this will be another learning process as the 41-year-old presides over a Group H campaign that also includes home-and-away matches against Lille and last season’s semi-finalists Ajax.
Firstly, though, it is Valencia, who, during the international break, sacked manager Marcelino Garcia Toral even though he had done so well for them, and appointed Albert Celades in his place.
Marcelino had led Valencia to consecutive fourth-place finishes in La Liga but was reported to have fallen out with the club’s owner Peter Lim over inactivity in the transfer market, so in has come Celades – who has managed Spain’s national age-group teams but never any senior side and has been working as an assistant to Julen Lopetegui for the last couple of years!
Neither of these clubs has started the season in sparkling form and Chelsea are expected to make the most of home advantage to grab an important early three points in what looks a competitive race for the two qualification places from this pool.
