Chelsea vs Tottenham Hotspur Match Preview
Chelsea’s odds look very short here, but so strongly are things stacked against Tottenham that the home team are the ones to side with.
These London rivals go into the weekend fourth and fifth in the table, Chelsea having the edge by one point in the chase for a return to the Champions League next term – assuming, of course, neither conquers Europe this season. If Manchester City’s UEFA ban remains in place, fifth position may be good enough to qualify anyway.
Although Chelsea have been struggling at Stamford Bridge for the last few months (see stats above) they have various aspects in their favour here, not least an extra 48 hours to recover since losing 2-0 at home to Manchester United on Monday than Spurs have had following Wednesday’s 1-0 Champions League home defeat to RB Leipzig.
Then there is Spurs’ lack of options in forward positions. Jose Mourinho returns to his former club without his two main sources of goals, Harry Kane and Heung-min Son, until at least early April and no other senior orthodox striker to call upon – and the injuries were clearly a source of great frustration to the ‘Special One’ after the Leipzig game judging by his remarks.
By contrast, Chelsea’s selection issues do not seem too bad, even though they now look set to be without key midfielder N’Golo Kante for a few weeks due to a groin strain.
The reverse fixture just before Christmas was won decisively by Chelsea and while the respective defences are likely to be on top here, the Blues are fancied to again grab three points that could prove vital in the quest to finish in the top four.
