Chelsea vs Manchester United Match Preview
Frank Lampard knocked Manchester United out of last season’s Carabao Cup away from home with a Championship team, so should be confident of repeating the trick this time.
But the Chelsea manager will also be mindful that his team have already been drubbed 4-0 by the Red Devils this term, albeit in a scoreline that greatly flattered United and at a time, on the opening weekend of the season, when Lampard’s youthful side was only just bedding in.
Since then, that result has taken on an even more anomalous look. Chelsea have made rapid strides with seven consecutive wins, while United could have been excused for putting the bunting up after scoring more than one goal for the first time in 13 attempts since they beat the Blues with a 3-1 victory at Norwich on Sunday.
It’s possible United may just have turned a corner after three successive largely positive games following a dismal spell, which included having to beat League One team Rochdale on penalties at home in this competition.
Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may want to keep building up the match fitness here of striker Anthony Martial, who may not always give off the best body language but his influence on the United team is tangible and they are much more effective with him than without.
Chelsea are flying right now and scoring lots of goals, but if Lampard sticks with the rookie players he fielded in the previous round of this competition they could be vulnerable against a United side that may just have that bit more valuable experience.
