Chelsea vs Liverpool Match Preview
After correctly predicting a 1-1 draw between these clubs in the UEFA Super Cup last month, we think another stalemate could be on the cards when they meet again at Stamford Bridge.
The holders of the Champions League and Europa League titles had to travel all the way to Istanbul to fight it out for another piece of silverware and it was Liverpool who eventually returned victorious, winning a penalty shootout after each team had scored once in both normal and extra time.
From Chelsea’s perspective, despite ultimately being defeated, it showed they are still just as competitive against the Reds under Frank Lampard as they had been previously, for their recent head-to-head record is pretty good.
Of course, since the trip to Turkey, Liverpool have won five out of five in the Premier League to move five points clear at the top of the table – the biggest lead there has been at this admittedly very early stage of the season.
That sort of consistency is what Chelsea are lacking, unsurprisingly with such a young team, and a concern for Lampard will be that the Blues have yet to win at home since he took charge – their away form has undoubtedly been better.
Chelsea have unleashed something of a revelation, however, in Tammy Abraham, who has justified being given the No 9 shirt with seven goals in his last three Premier League games, and having matched Jurgen Klopp’s side in Istanbul they may just do so again on home soil.
