Chelsea vs Newcastle United Match Preview

Only the scoreline will have disappointed Chelsea in their Carabao Cup semi-final first-leg match against Tottenham on Tuesday, and they should return to winning ways this weekend.

The Blues were the better team at Wembley, especially in the second half, but lost 1-0 to Harry Kane’s 26th-minute penalty.

That tie can be put on the backburner now for another week or so and Chelsea can focus on trying to cement their Premier League top-four place by beating Newcastle and then the closest challengers for their current position, Arsenal.

Maurizio Sarri’s side have been anything but free-scoring lately, basing their victories on being solid at the back, and we think this match could be another such example.

Newcastle also do not accumulate many goals and have won only one of their last nine games, but at least their results away from home are better than those on Tyneside this season which gives them hope of gaining something from this trip to the capital.

However, one exception occurred on Boxing Day when the Magpies were beaten 4-0 at Liverpool.

Everything points to this being a routine, workmanlike success for Chelsea which would leave their former interim manager Rafael Benitez’s current side still very much involved in what is presently a six-team dogfight at the foot of the table.
