Charlton may on paper have had the easier semi-final with Doncaster finishing 12 points adrift of fifth-placed Sunderland in the final standings, but they lost the second leg, which left them requiring extra-time and then penalties to get the job done.
However, it still leaves them with eight victories from their last 10 outings over 90 minutes, which at first glance is much better than what their opponents have managed of late.

Charlton Athletic vs Sunderland Match Preview
These clubs fought out arguably the most famous English Football League play-off match in the concept’s 33-year history – and we are backing Charlton to have the last laugh again.
On the corresponding Bank Holiday Monday in 1998, at the original Wembley Stadium, Charlton and Sunderland were locked together at 3-3 after 90 minutes as they sought a place in the Premier League. They both scored again in extra time, Clive Mendonca and Niall Quinn each ending up with a double, before Charlton eventually prevailed on penalties.
Now they are both there again, Wembley having subsequently been rebuilt, and seeking to get back into the Championship from League One, in which they have met this season for the first time since four out of six top-flight campaigns between 2001 and 2006.
A stronger end to this season lifted Charlton three points above Sunderland into third position in the table, albeit the Addicks ultimately needed a penalty shootout to get past Doncaster in their play-off semi-final after losing a dramatic second leg at home.
Sunderland edged out Portsmouth by the only goal of their tie, but it was not particularly convincing and neither was the Black Cats’ form generally over the last month of the regular season.
It will probably not be as exciting as in 1998, but Charlton are fancied to repeat that success and their better ratio of wins than Sunderland since February suggests they can do so in 90 minutes.
