Celtic take the next step on the road to what they hope will be a historic ‘treble Treble’ when they get their Scottish Cup campaign under way against third-tier club Airdrie.

The triple clean sweep has yet to be achieved in any major footballing nation – although Paris Saint-Germain have just done it three times in four years – but Celtic are seven-ninths of the way to winning everything in 2017, 2018 and 2019 after bagging the League Cup once more.

The Hoops are top of the Scottish Premiership table with a game in hand and now just 11/8 with bookmaker betway for another treble – and you can have 125/1 if you think they will win the Europa League as well!

Brendan Rodgers’ side are not expected to have any problems against Airdrie, who are a new club as opposed to the previous version that were beaten finalists in the Scottish Cup twice in the 1990s.

The new incarnation is officially called Airdrieonians – though usually abbreviated – and after being formed in 2002 to quickly replace the original Airdrie FC which went bust, they were initially denied a place in the League and so bought out financially-ailing Clydebank who therefore became extinct.

Although in mid-table of their division, Airdrie are in good form having collected 10 league points from the last 12 available.

But this is a hugely difficult task for the Diamonds, who are managed by former Rangers player Ian Murray, and Celtic are expected to show them no mercy.
