Celtic have already suffered European misery this season by being knocked out of the Champions League, but will be confident of staying involved in continental action through until December at least.

The Hoops conceded two goals in the last 10 minutes at home to CFR Cluj last week to lose in the third qualifying round of Europe’s elite club competition for the second successive campaign, the defeat being even more painful than the one to AEK Athens a year ago.

But at least there is the consolation prize for the Scottish champions of a Europa League play-off round tie, albeit this one is more difficult than when they eased past Lithuanian side Suduva in 2018 to reach the group stage.

AIK, the Swedish champions, exited the Champions League one round before Celtic, on away goals in extra time against Maribor, and they now find themselves crossing paths with Neil Lennon’s side having just beaten Sheriff Tiraspol in the Europa League qualifiers.

What AIK do best is score goals because they have not been particularly adept of late at keeping clean sheets, and there have to be defensive question marks about Celtic just now after the way they capitulated at home to Cluj.

Indeed, Celtic have conceded seven goals in their last three matches, so we can see them being given a scare by AIK here even though they should still be good enough over the two legs to advance to the round-robin phase.
