Cardiff v Huddersfield Match Preview
Cardiff City have surprised everyone with the amount of fight they have shown in the Premier League this season. After defying almost every stat imaginable in winning promotion as runners up in the Championship last season and reinforcing with further additions from the second tier in the summer, everybody expect the men from the Welsh capital to roll over and finish the campaign in the bottom three or perhaps even bottom place this season.
As things stand, the Bluebirds sit just two points and one place clear of the bottom three and they still have a real fight on their hands to avoid the drop zone this term, but we’ve seen them pick up some unexpected points of late, including in wins over the likes of Leicester City and Wolverhampton Wanderers. Last weekend they were dumped out of the FA Cup by League One outfit Gillingham but they’ll be keen to return to league action with three points here at 5/4 with Betway.
Huddersfield Town were in a similar position to Cardiff City this season when they began their first ever campaign in the Premier League last season. Like the Bluebirds this season, the Terriers showed some real fight to eventually steer clear of the bottom three, securing safety with a dramatic away draw at Chelsea with just two games remaining. This time around though safety is looking ever more likely to be slipping away from the West Yorkshire Club.
The FA Cup defeat at the hands of Championship side Bristol City last weekend was David Wagner’s side’s ninth consecutive defeat in all competitions and that run leaves them sitting rock bottom of the Premier League table on just 10 points, eight away from Cardiff in 17th. Unless he can mastermind a rare away win here at 11/4 with BetVictor, the German gaffer may be even fearing for his job after owner Dean Hoyle claimed he would not allow the club to “sleepwalk into relegation”.
When not coming up against a top six side Cardiff games have generally been quite low-scoring and they’ve managed to find the net just two times in their last three home matches. In Huddersfield though, they come up against the lowest scoring side in the Premier League who have managed to find the net just 13 times in their 21 league fixtures so far in this campaign. With two sides who are finding goals at a premium so far this term under 2.5 goals looks like a banker at 8/15 with
Coral.
Huddersfield’s lack of goals has been well-documented, as indeed has that losing run that now stretches back as far as nine games. Given that Cardiff have shown how good they can be at grinding out wins against other bottom-half sides, we can see them forcing another three points out of this fixture in front of their own fans. It won’t be pretty, but we can see a 1-0 scoreline here at odds of 11/2 with Betfred and boss Neil Warnock would be over the moon with that.
