Bury vs Portsmouth Match Preview
Portsmouth’s form has become a cause for alarm and they look well worth opposing in this Football League Trophy semi-final, even against a team from a division below.
Pompey have gone right off the boil since mid-January and before Saturday’s match against fellow League One promotion-chasers Barnsley, their only win within their last 10 games had been in this competition at home to Peterborough.
Kenny Jackett’s side had looked the best team in the English third tier for the first half of the season but are in danger of blowing all their good work following a series of drawn games.
Bury, in contrast, have been flying and going into their weekend derby against Paul Scholes’ Oldham side they had won eight of their last 10 matches and drew the other two.
The Shakers are in with every chance of automatic promotion from League Two in Ryan Lowe’s first full season as a manager, and the 40-year-old Liverpudlian is already being linked with jobs at bigger clubs as a result of his impressive exploits with Bury.
We would not be surprised if Bury won this tie in 90 minutes, but you can still get odds-against even if they advance to Wembley – it would be their first visit there since 1995 – on penalties, and both of those bets appeal.
