Bristol City vs Leeds United Match Preview
Leeds United aim to show why they are the bookmakers’ favourites for promotion from the Championship when they begin their 2019-20 campaign away to Bristol City.
The Whites have not been a Premier League club since 2004 and looked as though they would return to the elite for much of last season until falling short, eventually losing to Derby in the play-off semi-finals despite winning the first leg away from home.
It would not have been surprising if manager Marcelo Bielsa, who has a reputation for avoiding outstaying his welcome at a club, had left this summer. But the Argentine is still with Leeds and clearly feels he can take them back up to the promised land this time around.
Transfer business for Leeds has mainly been restricted to loan deals, e.g. for Wolves forward Helder Costa which will become permanent next year, and their pre-season excursions have taken them to Australia and Italy with five victories in eight games.
Bristol City will also be targeting promotion and again they have been focusing on the signing of emerging young players with big resale value, but a 5-0 friendly-match defeat at home to Crystal Palace last weekend was not the ideal way to go into a new season.
With Leeds having an excellent head-to-head record, they are backed to make a flying start to a campaign they will hope ends with them celebrating a long-awaited return to the top flight.
