Brighton vs Southampton Match Preview
Southampton have a strong record against Brighton, especially away from home, and this looks a good opportunity for them to put their first Premier League point of the season on the board.
Saints have lost to Burnley and Liverpool so far, 3-0 away and 2-1 at home respectively, and their only goal came as a result of a goalkeeping error caused by Danny Ings’ high pressing.
But at least, as our stats section outlines, this is a fixture in which Southampton traditionally fare well – and further hope is offered by Brighton’s poor goalscoring record at home in 2019 (see above).
Brighton began the new season superbly with a 3-0 win at Watford but although they were much the better team when they hosted West Ham last week, they had to settle for a 1-1 draw after falling behind.
At least there was a goal for their new Belgian winger signing Leandro Trossard, which means both he and his fellow summer recruit Neal Maupay are already off the mark for the Seagulls to indicate they could improve the team’s scoring output significantly this term.
It remains to be seen whether Brighton were flattered by their emphatic victory at Watford and simply caught their opponents cold, or if they have been properly lifted by manager Graham Potter’s appointment.
Either way, Southampton need to start doing better themselves and their head-to-head record suggests they can make the short journey back along the south coast with a point.
