Brighton vs Liverpool Match Preview

After a brilliant end to last year, Liverpool have not started 2019 the way they wanted and aim to get back on track against Brighton.

The Reds sang Auld Lang Syne seven points clear at the top of the Premier League table, but in the first week of January they have had that margin cut to four in a 2-1 defeat at Manchester City and then exited the FA Cup by the same scoreline at Wolves.

Manager Jurgen Klopp chose to field a second-string line-up for the Molineux tie and it was almost as though he sacrificed the FA Cup to ensure his first-choice players can focus on the bigger targets of the Premier League and Champions League during the rest of the season.

Therefore, Liverpool’s top stars should be comparatively fresh for this trip to the south coast to face a Brighton side who were beaten by a solitary Mo Salah goal at Anfield in August.

The Seagulls are again doing very well to keep themselves nicely clear of the relegation dogfight and a 3-1 FA Cup success away to Bournemouth, which earned a fourth-round tie at home to West Brom, suggests they could have another decent run in that competition.

Home form is Brighton’s strength. They have been very reliable in scoring goals at the Amex Stadium and look capable of doing so again, even against a much-improved defence such as Liverpool’s, and so if the league leaders are to return to winning ways it may be only by the narrowest of margins.
