Cardiff City are entering the ‘last-chance saloon’ in terms of avoiding relegation this season, with their trip to Brighton being the ultimate Premier League six-pointer.

Results at the weekend, with wins for Newcastle, Burnley and Southampton, meant Brighton are now realistically the only club Cardiff can catch as they try to avert the prospect of joining Huddersfield and Fulham in heading down to the Championship.

If the Bluebirds can win on this journey to England’s south coast, they would close their deficit to Brighton to just two points. Brighton would still have a game in hand, but that is away to Tottenham and they would be outsiders to get anything from that.

The problem for both of these clubs is that they are in no sort of form, hence their increasingly perilous positions in the table. Cardiff have lost six of their last seven games, while the Seagulls have failed to score in their latest four league and cup matches.

Even worse for Brighton, they were drubbed 5-0 at home on Saturday by a Bournemouth side who had been struggling for results themselves.

It really is difficult to trust either of these teams just now but as a draw would suit Brighton just fine, keeping their gap over Cardiff at five points, that looks the best bet here.
