Nathan Jones takes charge of Stoke City for the first time as two under-performing pre-season Championship promotion favourites go head-to-head at Griffin Park.

Jones was the surprising choice this week to take over from Gary Rowett, who was sacked by Stoke having only been appointed in the summer when he walked out on Derby County.

The Potters’ move for Jones was a consequence of his achievements with Luton Town, whom he got promoted from League Two and had taken into a position where they are on course for automatic elevation to the Championship.

If the Hatters do go up this term, they may well be facing their former boss’ new club because Stoke are eight points and, perhaps more importantly, eight places outside the play-off zone, which was clearly not good enough for their board after last season’s relegation.

Stoke were the favourites to make an immediate Premier League return before a ball was kicked, while Brentford were also right up there in the betting but have lost their way since manager Dean Smith left to take over at Aston Villa.

Thomas Frank needs to turn the Bees’ fortunes around but instead we are going for the ‘new manager effect’ to kick in here with Stoke, and for Jones to make a winning start to a role that became his with, seemingly, the minimum of fuss.
