Qatar have arrived in Brazil to compete in the forthcoming Copa America and will prepare for their first ever tournament outside their own confederation with a friendly match against the hosts.

Crowned champions of Asia for the first time in 2019, Qatar are set to participate in the Copa America both this year and next, when the competition begins a four-year cycle that brings it into line with the European Championship, joining Japan in being invited to this edition.

Rank outsiders of the 12 countries involved, the Middle Eastern nation have taken a squad of 23 to Brazil that consists exclusively of players that ply their trade domestically – yet they were good enough to win all of their seven matches at the Asian Cup, six of them to nil.

That kind of defensive solidity will be needed again both in the Copa America – in which Qatar have a very tough group with Argentina, Colombia and Paraguay – and this first meeting with five-time world champions Brazil.

Aiming to preserve an unbeaten record at home in friendly matches for 17 years, Tite’s team are taking on Qatar and Honduras before embarking upon what is a very kind Copa America group-stage schedule against Bolivia, Venezuela and Peru.

This will be a completely different experience for Qatar to anything they have encountered previously and it could be a steep learning curve, with Brazil expected to win emphatically.
