Bournemouth vs Watford Match Preview
Two of the clubs in the Premier League relegation zone meet at the Vitality Stadium and if either was to win, the battle to stay up would be blown even more wide open.
Just past the halfway mark of the season, it is difficult to tell how far up the table the dogfight to avoid the drop is likely to extend. Are Sheffield United, in eighth position with a nine-point cushion to the bottom three, safe? Probably, but you sense it is still too early to say.
What is certain is that Bournemouth and Watford need to double their respective points tallies of 20 and 19 as an absolute minimum, and they go into this game with contrasting levels of momentum after vastly differing results over the festive period.
Watford have had a real bounce under their new manager Nigel Pearson. They have collected 10 points from the last 12 available, but were then involved in a bizarre FA Cup third-round tie at home to League One club Tranmere in which they were cruising, 3-0 up at the break, only to be pegged back to 3-3 and they now face a replay on the Wirral.
For Bournemouth, it has been the opposite story. They have taken only four league points from a possible 30 to slide down the table, but boosted their confidence with a 4-0 rout of Championship strugglers Luton in the FA Cup as usually reliable striker Callum Wilson ended his 14-match goal drought.
Although Watford have a good record at this venue (see stats above) last weekend’s success may just have given Bournemouth the shot in the arm they needed and so we are backing what looks like being an entertaining contest to finish all-square.
