Borussia Dortmund vs Barcelona Match Preview
Barcelona, and Lionel Messi in particular, must still be stinging from the manner of another Champions League collapse last season – and will be keen to get off to a flyer this time around in Dortmund.
Just as they had in Rome the previous campaign, Barca grabbed defeat from the jaws of victory when they went to Liverpool with a 3-0 semi-final lead and managed to lose 4-0.
You don’t have to be Mystic Meg to work out that Messi will want at least one more Champions League triumph before he calls time on his incredible career, and the 12 goals he had scored in the competition leading up to the Anfield debacle illustrated his determination.
He could miss the Group F opener in Dortmund with the calf injury that meant he had not played competitively this season before the weekend, and his absence on this trip to Germany would be a big blow as Barcelona are not looking anywhere near the same team without him – and also because qualification is no gimme with Inter Milan in this very tough pool as well.
Dortmund are second favourites to Barcelona in the group and, as they did last term, have started the season strongly with Jadon Sancho and Paco Alcacer on fire in the Bundesliga.
In the likelihood that Messi will be absent, the Black and Yellows look capable of holding the Spanish champions who have taken only one point from their first two La Liga away games.
