Birmingham City vs Middlesbrough Match Preview
Middlesbrough still have an excellent defensive record despite slipping off the Championship promotion pace recently and are fancied to win away to Birmingham.
As the stats above reveal, Boro are easily the most solid team at the back in the second tier and have kept 15 clean sheets this season in all competitions.
They have not been at their best since the start of December though, with only three wins in their last 10 league and cup games and are now fifth in the table six points behind Norwich who occupy the second automatic promotion position.
But Tony Pulis’ side enjoyed a 5-0 rout of Peterborough in the FA Cup last weekend, all of the goals being scored in the second half, and that will have put them in good heart for this trip to the Midlands.
Credit must go to Garry Monk for the job he is doing with Birmingham in the face of a potential points deduction next month when a hearing takes place regarding the club’s breach of spending rules.
The Blues would be play-off contenders but for the punishment hanging over them, which is remarkable considering they were battling against relegation last term.
Birmingham have lost fewer Championship home games than any other club this season, with Bristol City the only visitors to win at St Andrew’s, but Middlesbrough are backed to edge a narrow success as they did at the Riverside Stadium in August through Britt Assombalonga.
