Belgium vs San Marino Match Preview

Belgium will undoubtedly seal their place at Euro 2020 by beating San Marino on Thursday, which would maintain their 100% record in Qualifying Group I.

It’s six wins out of six at present for Roberto Martinez’s side, who enjoyed a pair of 4-0 victories away from home last month against San Marino and Scotland.

It looks increasingly certain that Belgium and Russia will be the automatic qualifiers from this pool, while Scotland will have a second bite of the cherry via the play-offs thanks to their achievements in the UEFA Nations League.

The only competitive game Belgium have failed to win since the 2018 World Cup was the shock 5-2 defeat away to Switzerland that cost them a place in the Nations League semi-finals.

For this match and Sunday’s in Kazakhstan, Martinez has named a 28-man squad which does not include Manchester City playmaker Kevin de Bruyne due to a groin injury. But Borussia Dortmund midfielder Axel Witsel returns after a thigh problem.

This is actually a match between the best and worst teams in the world, according to FIFA, because San Marino are No 210 and bottom of their international rankings, with the minnows not even having scored a goal for over two years.

This is merely a matter of how many Belgium will score and it’s basically a case of ‘pick a number between one and 10’. The bookmakers believe seven or eight is most likely but we will err on the side of caution, with Martinez’s team selection likely to be informative as to how easily they will win bearing in mind the subsequent trip to Kazakhstan.
