Belarus vs Northern Ireland Match Preview
Northern Ireland are playing ‘catch us if you can’ with the Netherlands in Euro 2020 Qualifying Group C and can extend their advantage to nine points by winning in Belarus.
Michael O’Neill’s side got the chance to run and hide while the Dutch have been finishing runners-up in the UEFA Nations League during this end-of-season international schedule, maintaining their 100% record in the pool with a 2-1 victory in Estonia on Saturday.
It means that if the Irish complete the double over Belarus as well as Estonia, the Netherlands would be nine points behind them with two games in hand. But all four of Northern Ireland’s remaining fixtures are against the Dutch and Germany, who have won two out of two so far.
But all O’Neill’s team can keep doing is win their games, although they had to work hard at the weekend when they trailed for 52 minutes until Conor Washington and Josh Magennis turned it around with two quick goals.
Belarus, meanwhile, have lost three out of three, which is a far cry from the good form they showed in the Nations League against opposition of a similar standard to them.
It needed another late Magennis winner to sink Belarus in the reverse fixture to this one in Belfast, but Northern Ireland have some real momentum now and may just be able to prevail a shade more comfortably this time.
