Bayern Munich do not appear to be quite the force they were a few years ago, but they should still get their Champions League campaign under way with a comfortable victory.
Turn the clock back two or three seasons and Bayern would have been around a 7/1 chance to lift this trophy at the outset of the group stage. But now they are 12/1 joint sixth favourites with bet365 as the likes of Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain have moved ahead of them in the betting.
There are a few reasons why. Although Bayern continue to dominate the German football scene, their squad is not as strong as it was, manager Niko Kovac perhaps does not inspire maximum confidence and also the club nicknamed FC Hollywood have not reached a Champions League Final since their victory in 2013.
Red Star, who were European champions back in 1991 when they beat Bayern on route to glory, are in the group stage for the second consecutive season.
Last term, they enjoyed a superb 2-0 home win against eventual champions Liverpool but finished bottom of a very difficult pool, while this time they have again won four qualifying ties to get here, none of them by more than a one-goal margin over the two legs.
The Serbian champions have been ‘both teams to score’ specialists recently with no clean sheet kept in eight of their last nine games, so there may well be a consolation goal for them in Munich even though they are expected to be beaten fairly decisively.
