Bayern Munich vs Liverpool Match Preview
Bayern Munich have hunted down Borussia Dortmund at the top of the Bundesliga table over the last few weeks. After a slow start under their new boss Niko Kovacs at the start of the season, it appeared as though die Roten’s long running record of retaining the top trophy in German football was set to come to an end this term, but with Borussia Dortmund stuttering and their own form improving greatly, the Bavarian side have now gone top of the table on goal difference.
In a potentially tricky Champions League group, Kovacs men were twice held to draws by Ajax, who have since gone to dump out holders Real Madrid in the knock-out stages, but picked up four wins in their other four games to finish top of the group and set up this tie with Liverpool. In the first leg, the German side sat deep and frustrated the hosts and came away with the tie in the balance at 0-0. With the home advantage, they’re favourites to win this time at 15/13 with Unibet.
Liverpool have their sights set on a long-awaited English league title this season. Since the rebranded top division became the Premier League in 1992, the Reds have not managed to win the trophy despite once being the most successful team in the country, yet this year they find themselves very much in the fight. With just eight matches remaining, the Reds sit just one place and one point behind current leaders Manchester City.
In Europe, the Merseysiders have always enjoyed more success, winning the famous trophy last in 2005 and having managed to reach the final last year before crashing at the hands of Real Madrid. With their sights undoubtedly set on ending that long wait to win the Premier League title, the Champions League may not be the number one priority, but boss Jurgen Klopp will certainly be desperate to get one over his former Bundesliga rivals here at odds of 11/4 with BetVictor.
Perhaps surprisingly given the attacking quality on show in both squads here, we’re backing another low-scoring affair in this game. The first leg ended in gaolless in Anfield and indeed three of Liverpool’s last five matches in all competitions have ended without a goal. Bayern showed that they can be strong defensively in the first leg of this tie and they’ll have to be wary of Liverpool’s exciting three-pronged attack again here. Under 2.5 goals is available at 11/10 with Bet365.
It’s difficult to pick a winner between these two teams. Although Liverpool have been the better side throughout the season, their form of late has been a little sketchy and they’ve drawn five times in their last ten games. Bayern Munich have looked stronger as the season has gone on and do have the home advantage and we’re backing the two sides to play out another draw here at odds of 11/4 with BetVictor.
