Bayern Munich vs Hertha Berlin Match Preview
Bayern Munich may not have had the summer they wanted, especially from a transfer perspective, but that should all be forgotten when their Bundesliga title defence begins.
After the exits of five senior players including creative aces Arjen Robben, Franck Ribery and James Rodriguez, the German champions have needed fresh attacking talent – and been a little too public with who they were targeting.
Manager Niko Kovac talked up the chances of signing Leroy Sane from Manchester City (before the player got injured) and had to apologise to Pep Guardiola. There has been mooted interest in Gareth Bale but at the time of writing, Bayern had added only Ivan Perisic on loan to join big-money French defensive reinforcements Lucas Hernandez and Benjamin Pavard.
Perisic is suspended here due to an accumulation of bookings in Italy last term, so he will not be able to supply Robert Lewandowski who has also been quite vocal about transfers this summer – specifically the club’s lack of progress in replacing Robben and Ribery.
Hertha Berlin, meanwhile, finished in mid-table last season and have a new manager in their former player Ante Covic, who has stepped up from the reserve team to replace Pal Dardai.
However, the club nicknamed the Old Lady are not Germany’s answer to Juventus and have failed to score on their last five visits to the Allianz Arena, with another routine defeat looking likely to come their way here.
