Bayern Munich vs Chelsea Match Preview

Frank Lampard’s men were doled out a hammering by Hans-Dieter Fick’s Bayern Munich in their Champions League first-leg knockout tie, losing by three goals to naught. The chief tormentor? The same man who haunted Tottenham in that historic 7-2 battering in the group-stage clash not three months prior: Serge Gnabry.

As a former Arsenal player, there was a certain relish in the manner in which Gnabry went about his business, dismantling the Blues back four with his pace, skill and attacking prowess. And with a strike-partner like Robert Lewandowski in tow who’s in hot Champions League form, it was no surprise that the 24-year-old bagged another brace.

A more interesting inclusion of the Bayern attack, however, and one that’ll most likely warrant another mention in the second leg in March is Alphonso Davies. The 19-year-old teenage sensation may have had Gnabry and Lewandowski ahead of him in the ranks, yet his passing and movement were far sharper and inventive than Chelsea’s lackadaisical attack.

With three powerful counterattacking options on hand, Lampard’s defensive issues look all the more alarming. Especially when the absences involve key players such as N’Golo Kante, Christian Pulisic, Tammy Abraham and Ruben Loftus-Cheek. Add a suspended Marcos Alonso and Jorginho to the pile, and there’s very little that suggests any kind of comeback will be on the cards.

Bayern are simply sharper, more in form, more clinical, and more ruthless, and Chelsea fans have every right to fear another hammering come March 17th.
