Two clubs that have followed identical paths over the last few years meet for the first time this season with Barnsley looking as though they could soon separate themselves from Burton Albion.

Both were promoted to the Championship in 2016 at the end of their first ever campaign in the same division, and subsequently their fortunes have continued to run parallel.

Barnsley and Burton both stayed up in 2017 but were relegated last season, and now it is the Yorkshire club who are in much better shape to elevate themselves back up to the second tier.

The Tykes last summer appointed Daniel Stendel as manager, coming from the same conveyor belt of German coaching talent as David Wagner, Daniel Farke and Jan Siewert.

The 44-year-old, who progressed through the ranks at Hannover rather than Borussia Dortmund like the other trio, is making a success of the job and has Barnsley in a good position to finish in League One’s top two.

Burton are in mid-table and the highlight of their campaign so far has been reaching the Carabao Cup semi-finals – their consequent 9-0 mauling by Manchester City notwithstanding – while since Christmas they have been more difficult to beat in the league.

Nigel Clough’s side have lost only once in their last 10 league games – and that suggests they will put up a strong fight against Barnsley in a fixture that was originally postponed in September when an Oakwell match-day volunteer was taken seriously ill just before kick-off.
