Barcelona vs Valencia Match Preview
Barcelona were denied a shot at the Treble this season against Liverpool, but can console themselves by adding the Copa del Rey to La Liga title on Saturday – and making history.
A repeat of their 2015 clean sweep has eluded Barca as they squandered a 3-0 first-leg lead in their Champions League semi-final, and that obviously hurt Lionel Messi and Co like mad considering they had put their heart and soul into regaining Europe’s most coveted trophy.
But they retained the Spanish league title by 11 points and now have only Valencia between they and becoming the first club ever to lift the Copa del Rey in five straight seasons during its 117-year history.
Ernesto Valverde’s side will have to do so without Luis Suarez, who has undergone knee surgery, but they should still possess too much firepower for a Valencia side that finished the campaign strongly and claimed a place in the Champions League group stage for next term.
Los Che had a blip around the time they lost their Europa League semi-final to Arsenal, but recovered well to pip Sevilla and Getafe for the all-important fourth position in the league.
However, Barcelona have established a monopoly on the King’s Cup and with their European disappointment still burning, they are backed to complete that unprecedented five in a row that would elevate them above fellow four-peaters Real Madrid and Athletic Bilbao.
