Barcelona vs Real Betis Predictions
On paper, Barcelona are possibly the best football team in the world. With a squad including modern legends like Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Antoine Griezmann, it’s hard to imagine anybody beating this formidable side. If you want to back Barcelona to beat Real Betis, then the best odds you are going to find are 27/100 from William Hill.
But the unthinkable happened last weekend when Barcelona were beaten 1-0 away to Athletic Bilbao. The La Liga champions were stunned by an astonishing 89th minute volley from the 38-year old Aritz Aduriz and suffered only their fifth La Liga defeat in little more than two seasons.
Although Barcelona hit the woodwork twice through strikes from Suarez and Rafinha, this was a very below-par performance from Ernesto Valverde’s team. With Messi out injured, Suarez hobbling off half-way through, and Griezmann and Ousmane Dembele failing to make an impact, it was a performance that will definitely strengthen the case for making a last minute Neymar signing.
Much of this was blamed on Barcelona’s intensive preseason schedule, but the overriding impression was that Valverde’s side simply weren’t controlling the game. It was a far cry from the Barcelona of 2018/19 where the team claimed their second successive La Liga title 11 points clear of their nearest rivals.
Although key players like Suarez and Dembele will be absent through injuries, the match will give Griezmann another chance to show his true worth after the new signing barely made an impression in the match against Bilbao. Thankfully, Messi looks to have recovered from his calf injury and should make an appearance on Sunday night, and you can get odds of 23/10 for the Argentine striker to be first to score at BetVictor.
Historically Barcelona have a much better winning record against Real Betis. With 17 wins in 27 encounters, Valverde’s team should add another victory on Sunday night. There’s not much value in any of the basic Barcelona match winner odds. But as Barcelona have stacked up recent wins against Real Betis with scorelines like 1-4, 0-5 and 6-2, it could be worth betting on the odds of 4/1 for Barcelona to win by three goals at PaddyPower.
Real Betis suffered an ill-tempered 1-2 home defeat against lowly Valladolid last weekend. Such a result won’t have boosted the morale of a team who limped to a mediocre 10th place finish in their 2018/19 La Liga campaign.
However, the last time that Real Betis played at Camp Nou, they managed to pull off an astonishing 3-4 away win thanks to goals from Junior Firpo, Joaquin, Giovani Lo Celso and Sergio Canales. Although Lo Celso has left to join Tottenham on loan, it could be worth taking a chance on the odds of 11/1 for Real Betis to win at Ladbrokes.
