Returning to Camp Nou will evoke the very best of memories for Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, but it is difficult to see his team staging another of their magnificent Champions League comebacks in this tie.

Solskjaer, of course, scored that famous last-gasp winner for the Red Devils in this stadium that completed their historic Treble in 1999, while he has also engineered another miraculous recovery away to Paris Saint-Germain in the previous round of this season’s competition.

Having trailed 2-0 heading to the French capital, a 1-0 deficit this time looks an easier assignment at face value. But Barcelona surely are more mentally resilient than PSG even if any kind of United onslaught does materialise.

An own goal by Luke Shaw – suspended for this match – under severe pressure from Luis Suarez was the difference between these teams at Old Trafford, where United did well to take the game to their opponents but lacked quality to create chances in the final third of the pitch.

It was difficult to work out whether Barcelona, with Lionel Messi quiet by his standards, were playing within themselves and doing just enough to win on the night, or they were hanging on and grateful for United’s lack of cutting edge.

Whatever the answer, it should be a much different contest on Spanish soil and with United generally performing far less convincingly than six weeks ago when they went to Paris, we expect Barcelona to beat them more comfortably this time.
