Barcelona vs Liverpool Match Preview
Barcelona are looking to win another treble of trophies this season as they go in search of the Copa Del Rey, La Liga and of course, the Champions League. With a nine point gap at the top of La Liga at the time of writing, the league title does seem to be all but wrapped up for Ernesto Valverde’s side and they have a cup final against Valencia next month to look forward to but for now attention returns to the continent and this Champions League semi-final against Liverpool.
So far, Blaugrana have topped a difficult group that included Italian giants Inter Milan and fellow semi-finalists Tottenham Hotspur and overcome both Lyon and Manchester United in the knock-out stages with relative ease as they look to capture the biggest prize in European football for the first time since 2015. With the home advantage the Catalonians are the favourites to earn a first leg win here at odds of 8/11 with PaddyPower.
Liverpool are still looking for their first trophy under the management of Jurgen Klopp. The Reds have come close on several occasions, losing out in Europa League and Champions League finals under their German boss, but they’ve been better than ever this season to remain within touching distance of league leaders Manchester City going into the final few weeks of the season plus to make it through to the final four in Europe once again.
The Reds were also handed a difficult group stage draw as they were pitted against Napoli and PSG, but a win over Partenopei on the final Matchday was enough to secure their route through before wins over Bayern Munich and Porto in the Champions League have seen them through to the semi-final stage. Interestingly, the Merseysiders have never lost in four previous trips to Camp Nou, can they extend that run with a win here at 7/2 with William Hill?
For us, Blaugrana will be too strong in front of their own fans for Liverpool. They appear to have grown more streetwise and difficult to beat under Valverde and with the quality of Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez in their ranks they are one of admittedly few teams with the quality to get the better of this Barca backline. Although they didn’t score, Manchester United caused Barca problems of their own in the last round and with a more potent attack we expect Liverpool to take advantage of one of those chances here so the home win and both teams to score bet is our first tip at 2/1 with PaddyPower.
That man Suarez was a real hero to the Liverpool faithful before securing a move to Camp Nou in the summer of 2014 but since then he has cemented his status as a Barcelona legend, racking up 131 goals in just 162 league appearances for the club. This season, the Uruguayan international has smashed in 24 goals in all competitions and he will be desperate to haunt his former club by getting on the scoresheet here at any time at odds of 20/21 with Bet365.
