Barcelona v Real Madrid Match Preview
Barcelona look set to win the La Liga title once again this season. With both Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid struggling to keep up the pace so far in this campaign, Blaugrana haven’t particularly looked at their best so far yet have still managed to open up a six point gap at the top of the La Liga table, although it had been out at eight points before an unexpected home draw with Valencia over the weekend in which they had to come from two goals down to rescue a point.
An over-reliance on star man Lionel Messi is often stated when discussing this Barca outfit and that has been the case at times this season, but Ernesto Valverde’s men are still favourites for the two domestic trophies on offer and are likely to be among the frontrunners in the Champions League, particularly as they are heavy favourites to progress past Olympique Lyonnais in the Round of 16. You can back Blaugrana to win here at odds of 3/4 with Betfair.
Real Madrid have unsurprisingly struggled to cope this season with the summer loss of manager Zinedine Zidane plus star player Cristiano Ronaldo to Juventus. Zidane’s replacement Julen Lopetegui wasn’t given much in the way of a transfer kitty to bring the squad up to scratch and replace the departing Ronaldo and as such, it didn’t come as too much of a surprise when the ex-Spain manager lasted just a few short months before being shown the exit door at Santiago Bernabeu.
Lopetegui’s replacement for the time being at least is Santiago Solari and although los Blancos have certainly improved under the Argentinian so far, they’re yet to reach the levels expected of a Real Madrid outfit by their demanding supporters. The men from the capital do make the trip to Catalonia on Wednesday night on the back of five consecutive wins in all competitions, but they’re still out at 7/2 to pick up all three points with Coral.
We’re backing the goals in this fixture. Four or more goals have been scored in Barcelona’s last two games and with the attacking talents of Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez on show, Blaugrana are always going to be more of a threat going forward than they are defensively sound at the back. Over 3.5 goals have been scored in three of Real Madrid’s last four matches and that’s why we’re backing the same bet again here at 25/19 with Unibet.
Messi did go down with a knock during the draw with Valencia on Saturday evening, but he has been included in the squad for this game and is likely to play if his fitness allows. The 31 year old scored a brace to secure a point for his side in that game and take his season’s tally to an incredible 29 goals in 27 appearances in all competitions. That’s why we can’t resist backing him for at least one goal in this game at Coral.
