Atletico Madrid vs Villarreal Match Preview
Villarreal are a true bogey team for Atletico Madrid and after a recent resurgence, they could cause more problems for their hosts on Sunday.
As the stats above reveal, the Yellow Submarine have rarely been beaten by Atletico since 2015 and their head-to-head record in the capital is particularly impressive – two wins and two draws on their last four visits.
Still in the relegation zone during a season that has contained too many draws, Villarreal nevertheless look to have made the right decision in giving Javi Calleja a second chance as manager – he was reinstated recently after Luis Garcia Plaza’s appointment failed to work.
Since Calleja’s return, the club from just outside Valencia have compiled a run of three consecutive clean sheets, won away to Sporting Lisbon in the Europa League – Thursday’s second leg was played after this was being written – and dished out a 3-0 home beating to fourth-placed Sevilla.
Atletico, meanwhile, have not been their usual reliable selves at home over the last month, conceding three goals on their own pitch to both Girona, which meant they exited the Copa del Rey, and Real Madrid.
Having had Wednesday’s Champions League match against Juventus to focus on (result not known at the time of writing) Atletico could be vulnerable here against an improving Villarreal side and look worth opposing.
