Juventus had the last laugh after losing at this venue in last season’s Champions League round of 16 – and are now backed to end Atletico Madrid’s winning home sequence.

In February, late goals from Uruguayan defenders Jose Gimenez and Diego Godin gave Atletico a 2-0 win that looked to have put them well on course for the quarter-finals. But three weeks later, a hat-trick by Cristiano Ronaldo – who else? – turned the tie around.

Since then, Atletico have racked up eight wins and a draw at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium, which has quickly been turned into every bit as much of a fortress as the old Vicente Calderon arena.

Diego Simeone’s side are very difficult to stop on their own pitch, especially in Europe (see stats above), but they did slip to a 2-0 La Liga defeat away to Real Sociedad at the weekend.

But Juventus are also an extremely formidable side, especially with that man Ronaldo who has been the bane of Atletico’s lives in this competition down the years – especially when he was playing just across the Spanish capital for Real Madrid.

Maurizio Sarri’s side were held 0-0 at Fiorentina on Saturday, but when Juventus are 100% on their game they are up there with the continent’s very best teams and they could just be good value to inflict more anguish on Atletico.
