Bayer Leverkusen’s hopes of a successful European campaign are already looking precarious and they cannot afford to lose both of their upcoming back-to-back matches against Atletico Madrid.

The German club will always have realised they were third favourites in Champions League Group D and therefore most likely to drop into the Europa League after Christmas – but even achieving that is starting to resemble an uphill struggle.

Die Werkself were immediately on the back foot as they suffered a shock opening 2-1 defeat at home to Lokomotiv Moscow and then, more predictably, were beaten 3-0 by Juventus – who sit joint top of the standings on four points with Atletico.

Diego Simeone’s side, meanwhile, share first place courtesy of a 2-2 draw at home to Juve and then a 2-0 victory in the Russian capital which came in the midst of a sequence of five consecutive clean sheets kept before the October international break.

However, three of those shutouts occurred in 0-0 draws and with Leverkusen’s domestic form being perfectly respectable as they resumed at the weekend just two points off the top of the table, this may not be straightforward for Atletico.

Leverkusen will be aware of just how urgently they need to start collecting points in this group to climb above Lokomotiv at the very least, and there could be some value in backing them to open their account by holding their Spanish hosts.
