Sevilla visit the San Mames Stadium on both Thursday and Sunday and are fancied to make the first of those trips a winning one in the Copa del Rey.

These clubs are each other’s last opponent in the first half of La Liga season, which also means they meet on the final weekend of the campaign in May, but the draw for the King’s Cup has also pitched them together three times within seven days.

The decision to hire Pablo Machin as manager in the summer looks to have been an inspired one by Sevilla, who failed with their three previous appointments in the search for a long-term replacement for the highly successful Unai Emery.

Machin has got the Rojiblancos flying high in third position in La Liga and they are also on course to enjoy another lengthy run in the Europa League, which they won three times under Emery.

Athletic Bilbao, meanwhile, are towards the foot of the league table and they have already sacked former Sevilla boss Eduardo Berizzo this term, his successor being Gaizka Garitano.

Although Sevilla’s strength tends to be their home form, where they won 10 in a row before Sunday’s draw with Atletico Madrid, they look capable of claiming a lead here to take home with them for the second leg simply because they are proving so superior to their Basque opponents this season.
