Athletic Bilbao vs Atletico Madrid Match Preview

Atletico Madrid travel to Bilbao for their Matchday 28 clash on Saturday, just days after seeing a thrashing Champions League exit in the hands of Juventus (3-0) – where Bianconeri overturned their two-goal advantage as Cristiano Ronaldo completed a hat-trick against an unrecognizable side.

Atleti have thus seen their five-match winning streak across competitions ended and Diego Simeone will now be looking for a quick fix, as his men keep up with pace-setters Barcelona with wins over Rayo Vallecano (0-1), Villarreal (2-0), Real Sociedad (0-2), and Leganes (1-0) in La Liga.

Athletic Bilbao will have plans of their own in search of ways to capitalize on the rivals woes, but they’ve seen a couple of troubled displays of recent as well. They’ve seen Valencia bag the points in a 2-0 loss at Mestalla and only held Espanyol to a 1-1 draw with a late equalizer from Raul Garcia over the past two weeks.

Gaizka Garitano’s men have thus struggled to create and convert chances and this will be more worrying as they host the best defence in the league, despite the rivals largely underwhelming display earlier this week. Los Leones haven’t suffered a home loss in La Liga since October, though, and have a lot to build on themselves.

However, we don’t see them doing so and we’ll now rather stick our necks out for Atletico Madrid to snatch all three points, going for an Away win at 5/4 with William Hill and hoping they can recuperate quickly.

Indeed, the visitors have based success on tough defensive displays before anything else and we expect more of the same now, as we also go for Atletico to keep a clean sheet at 5/4 with Paddy Power – which seems great value with odds drifting after their mid-week slip-up.
