Atalanta vs Valencia Match Preview
After a slow start, Atalanta eventually got used to Champions League life in this season’s group stage – and the draw has given them an excellent chance to reach the quarter-finals.
The club from Bergamo are contesting Europe’s elite club competition for the first time and they must have wondered what had hit them when they lost their first three matches 4-0 away to Dinamo Zagreb, 2-1 at home to Shakhtar Donetsk and 5-1 at Manchester City.
Atalanta still had only one point after four games in Group C. But they squeezed through to the knockout phase by winning their last two and then managed to avoid all the big guns in the draw for the round-of-16, instead getting Valencia.
The Spanish side emerged on top of a very tight pool ahead of fellow qualifiers Chelsea, winning their final match 1-0 away to Ajax to eliminate last season’s semi-finalists and book their own passage. Like their next opponents, Valencia will be happy with their draw.
But despite the contrast in European experience between these clubs, you have to think the advantage is with Atalanta. Gian Piero Gasperini’s side are on well course for a top-four finish in Serie A again and while Valencia still have every chance of the same achievement in La Liga, their recent form has been unconvincing with only one win in their last five games.
La Dea are flying by comparison with three victories in four plus a draw and having got to grips with the Champions League after such an uncertain beginning, they are fancied to take a lead in the tie with them to Spain for the second leg.
