Aston Villa vs Everton Match Preview
Aston Villa were undone by individual errors last week and cannot afford to make the same mistakes against an Everton side who have made a solid start to the 2019-20 season.
After leading for more than two-thirds of their opening game away to Tottenham before losing 3-1, Villa had high hopes of a first win back in the Premier League at home to Bournemouth but found themselves 2-0 down after just 12 minutes.
The errors came from goalkeeper Tom Heaton, in conceding a penalty, and fellow new signing Douglas Luiz, who later partly redeemed himself by pulling a goal back to make the final score 2-1 in a team performance that otherwise pleased manager Dean Smith.
But it will be no easier for last term’s Championship play-off winners against Everton, whose back five have yet to concede a goal even though their boss Marco Silva has freely admitted he is light on defensive options after the departures of Phil Jagielka and on-loan Kurt Zouma.
A goal from Brazilian winger Bernard was enough to earn the Toffees victory over Watford last week after an opening 0-0 draw at Crystal Palace – and the good news for Silva is that he has attacking players on the bench chomping at the bit for an opportunity, namely new signings Moise Kean and Alex Iwobi plus Theo Walcott.
Silva clearly has faith in his current first XI, however, and they are backed to have too much quality for a new-look Villa side currently learning some harsh lessons in the top flight.
