Aston Villa vs Derby Match Preview

Aston Villa are heading back to Wembley Stadium for a Championship play-off final. The Villains lost in the Football League’s showpiece event last summer, going down 1-0 to Fulham and that defeat seemed to take the wind out of their sails as they started the new campaign poorly, eventually leading to the sacking of manager Steve Bruce, who was replaced by boyhood fan Dean Smith, who arrived from Brentford in October.

It may have taken some time for the former Walsall boss to implement his attacking style on the squad, but they ended the season in magnificent fettle, losing only two in their last 15 matches of the campaign including their play-off semi final against West Bromwich Albion. The Villains may have needed penalties to overcome their Midlands rivals in that clash, but they are still the favourites in the final at 6/5 with Bet365.

Derby County have been regular competitors in the play-offs in recent years, with this being their fourth attempt to win promotion through the post-season fixtures in the last six seasons. A host of different managers have attempted to navigate the Rams into the top tier and failed in this period, but there is real hope that Chelsea legend Frank Lampard can be the man to take the club back to the promised land.

It’s fair to say it hasn’t been plain sailing for Lampard in his first campaign as a head coach, but he’s enjoyed some terrific moments, not least an EFL Cup win over Manchester United at Old Trafford and a phenomenal second-leg comeback against Leeds United in the semi-finals of these play-offs.
