Aston Villa vs Derby Match Preview
Aston Villa are heading back to Wembley Stadium for a Championship play-off final. The Villains lost in the Football League’s showpiece event last summer, going down 1-0 to Fulham and that defeat seemed to take the wind out of their sails as they started the new campaign poorly, eventually leading to the sacking of manager Steve Bruce, who was replaced by boyhood fan Dean Smith, who arrived from Brentford in October.
It may have taken some time for the former Walsall boss to implement his attacking style on the squad, but they ended the season in magnificent fettle, losing only two in their last 15 matches of the campaign including their play-off semi final against West Bromwich Albion. The Villains may have needed penalties to overcome their Midlands rivals in that clash, but they are still the favourites in the final at 6/5 with Bet365.
Derby County have been regular competitors in the play-offs in recent years, with this being their fourth attempt to win promotion through the post-season fixtures in the last six seasons. A host of different managers have attempted to navigate the Rams into the top tier and failed in this period, but there is real hope that Chelsea legend Frank Lampard can be the man to take the club back to the promised land.
It’s fair to say it hasn’t been plain sailing for Lampard in his first campaign as a head coach, but he’s enjoyed some terrific moments, not least an EFL Cup win over Manchester United at Old Trafford and a phenomenal second-leg comeback against Leeds United in the semi-finals of these play-offs. Can Derby now succeed where they have fallen short in recent seasons and finally earn that long-awaited promotion with a win here at 11/5 with 4/1 with PaddyPower?
We’re backing goals in this game. Derby’s second-leg victory over Leeds saw them run out 4-2 winners and indeed, their final two regular season games saw both teams find the net too. Both teams have found the net in three of Villa’s last four matches too and with the attacking talent on display here, the same is to be expected again at Wembley. We’re backing the Midlands outfit to do just enough to get through though, so the Villa win and BTTS bet looks good to us at Bet365.
Jack Grealish has enjoyed another phenomenal campaign at the heart of this Aston Villa outfit. The 23 year old midfielder was almost sold to Tottenham Hotspur in the summer but having failed to see that move materialise, has refocused his efforts on winning his boyhood club promotion back to the Premier League with some magnificent displays, including goals in important away wins over Rotherham and Bolton last month. He’s our anytime scorer pick at 4/1 with PaddyPower.
