Arsenal vs Tottenham Hotspur Match Preview
Mauricio Pochettino goes into the North London derby having had to deny on Friday that it will be his last match as Tottenham Hotspur manager.
The Argentine was the subject of a big gamble on Thursday to leave Spurs, forcing bookmaker Coral to close their market, and there is little doubt that for much of this year, Pochettino has spoken publicly like a man seeking a way out of his job.
But ‘Poch’, who told journalists during the summer they should call him ‘head coach’ rather than manager as he has so little influence on transfers at the club, took the opposite stance on Friday when quizzed at his pre-match press conference, insisting: “I’m not going to walk away after the London derby. I will be here on Monday.”
However, to lose a fixture in which Spurs have a poor recent record (see stats above) would add more pressure on Pochettino, even though he led the club to the Champions League Final last season – as things stand, they have won only two of their last eight domestic games, drawn two and lost four.
Last weekend’s defeat at home to Newcastle was a big blow and much more surprising than Arsenal being beaten 3-1 away to Liverpool, which represented an improvement on their 5-1 trouncing at Anfield last term.
With Christian Eriksen still being linked with a move to Real Madrid before Monday’s transfer deadline as he will not sign a new contract with Spurs, these are very unsettled times on White Hart Lane.
Pochettino really cannot afford another defeat but with Harry Kane possessing a superb goalscoring record against their fierce rivals, Tottenham may be able to snatch a point.
