Arsenal vs Newcastle United Match Preview
Just like their fierce local rivals Tottenham, Arsenal are facing an opponent this weekend against whom they have a fantastic recent record – and the North London win double on Sunday looks a good bet.
While Spurs are expected to beat Aston Villa away, the Gunners have home advantage as they take on Newcastle and the stats above outline just how one-sided these meetings have been over the past eight years in particular.
In recent times their head-to-head matches have been mostly low-scoring affairs and we think this one could also be tight, essentially because of these clubs’ recent form with draws being a prominent theme in their respective sets of results.
Arsenal have drawn 13 of their last 22 games in all competitions and it’s only three wins out of nine for their manager Mikel Arteta, who has made them defensively more solid and tactically sounder but is yet to generate a huge improvement – that’s likely to take time.
Newcastle, meanwhile, have not lost since New Year’s Day but that stat is not as impressive as it sounds due to being held in 90 minutes in three FA Cup encounters against League One opponents and also to a 0-0 draw when hosting the Premier League’s bottom club Norwich.
In fairness, the Magpies collected a creditable point away to both Wolves and Everton during the current spell, but the Emirates Stadium is not a happy hunting ground for them and while they should put up a decent fight, it may not be enough to stop Arsenal from edging victory.
